In the spring of 2004, Richard + Wittschiebe Architects surveyed components of
the house structure and developed a new schematic plan for our chapter house.
Several new components of the Lambda Chi Fraternity
house include an elevator to all floors and the relocation of the chapter room
to the second floor. The third floor penthouse, where the chapter room
previously existed, has changed to dorm rooms. Several more floor plan changes related to
accessibility have affected the bathrooms, stairwells and dorm rooms on all
three floors. While the spaces have been substantially rearranged, the
fraternity is still able to sleep at 54 brothers and associate
members.
These changes were not entirely expected and the cost of construction has increased to two million dollars.
Fortunately, this amount was still within our reach when combining a bank loan
and the Capital Campaign. It is important to note that the Building Committee
took a serious look at completely tearing down the house and starting from
scratch, but research showed that new construction costs for a house our size
would easily reach the three million dollar mark.
In addition, the boundaries of the fraternity house are grand fathered in and
could only be maintained in a renovation. New construction would have significantly
reduced the footprint of the building.
Once our monetary goal was finalized, we began to meticulously prepare loan
request books for two different banks in the Atlanta area. Thanks to the loan
received, the renovations were within our reach. The next step was to send the construction drawings to permit with the City
of Atlanta for several weeks while the final touches were made to the plans to
prepare them for bidding by a group of select contractors.
The key that made this construction a reality is the continued support of our alumni.
I want to thank you for helping us thus far, as we have received
pledges close to five hundred thousand dollars. The success of the Capital
Campaign is due in large part to Jerry Harmon's ‘69, relentless efforts and
determination to
make our dream come true. I urge you to contact us and pledge your support
today.
